The Costly Pour

Posted on

“A sinful woman came to Jesus with an alabaster jar of expensive perfume. She wept as she poured it on Jesus’ feet and wiped them with her hair.  The disciples saw and were indignant asking, Why this waste?” (Matt‬ ‭26:6-8‬)

I closed my eyes and could see her tears dropping one by one onto His feet as she made her unhindered offering. I could see her gazing up at Him. I wondered, did she verbally tell Him, “I love you”? Or did her actions speak louder than any words ever could? I watched as she poured out every drop without hesitation.

I couldn’t miss the loud commotion that stirred in the room, the mocking voices that shouted, “What a waste!” The ones that labeled her foolish. But I noticed that it didn’t phase her. Did she even hear the stabbing voices or was she so focused on Christ that these voices were silenced? She didn’t flinch. Was it her posture that allowed her this unhindered devotion? Was it the depth of her rescue that afforded her this unshifting worship?

My heart and mind wandered to my reality, my rescue story and the “room of my mind.” For each time I pick up my jar to pour out, I catch this same commotion. Do you hear it in your mind too? The mocker butting in, “What a waste!” Will we side with the mocking voice or will we take a humble posture and pour out our all for Jesus’ namesake?

There’s love in the room that speaks a better word. “But Jesus said, “Leave her alone. Why do you trouble her? She has done a beautiful thing to Me.” “She has done what she could.” (Mark‬ ‭14:6‬, 8)

This sinful woman couldn’t help her response. She was overwhelmed by Jesus’ love poured out on her broken rebellious soul and knelt and poured out on Him all that she had. She did all that she could.

What’s your story? Have you knelt at His feet lately?

I love Jesus’ words. “She has done what she could.” What could you and I do today for His namesake? Listen to His Voice of Truth.

Nothing is a waste. Let it be the joy of your heart and mine to spend our lives telling of all His wonders. He rejoices in every drop. He is worthy.

Every offering is a pleasing aroma to the Lord. “We are not our own, we were bought at a high price.”
(1 Corinthians‬ ‭6‬:‭20)‬ ‭
