It All Went Down at the Well

Posted on

It was noonday and the woman went to draw water from the well, a bucket over her shoulder with heavy burdens on her heart, a broken past and present. The man met her there and her heart hit her toes as He began to voice the secrets of her soul, the storyline of her life.

But how did He know?

She stood there, an adulterous woman with a heart wrenching record, her bucket filled with regrets. The man, Jesus, leaned in and pointed to her bucket, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again.” He looked into her eyes, “The water I offer, that I freely give to you, is Living. It is a spring welling up to eternal life.” (John 4:13-14)

She could hardly fathom what was happening, “I know that the Messiah is coming and that when He comes He will tell us everything we need to know. ~ Jesus lifted her chin, “I who speak to you, I am He.” (John 4:26)

I wonder if tears immediately hit her cheeks? Did her face light up with hope? Did she sigh? Did she look away or did she look straight into His eyes? She came to the well to fill her bucket with water and to go on her way, back to the empty and ordinary life. She left with her burdens lifted and her heart filled.

It all went down at the well. It all went down in my heart too. My burdens different, but my heart and soul needing a rescue. Jesus met me at the well. He told me everything I ever did and gave me everything I ever needed.

Has He met you there? He wants to friend.

Jesus knows our everything. Everything leaves out nothing. The mercy He extended to this woman was tender and extravagant and He extends the same to you and me. She went looking for pleasures in so many places and found the greatest desire of her heart only met by the man at the well, Jesus. And she ran to tell.

“He told me everything I ever did.” ~ I am running to tell you. He told me to let you know that He sees everything you ever did and wants to meet you at the well to assure you of His love for you and offer you a drink that bubbles up to eternal life and fills your deepest longing inside.

“The world will try, but it can never fill.”

Everything leaves out nothing and Jesus wants to offer us everything our hearts are longing for.

Oh Lord, each of our storylines are different, but each story you desire to bust into and write your redemption. You are so extravagant. When we reach out for this water, you begin to pour it in and open our eyes to the mystery. It’s no secret that we all have burdens and regrets, and You don’t want it to be a secret that You can meet us in every single one. Amen.
